The Nets will make their long-awaited Brooklyn debut on November 1, 2012 against now cross-borough rival New York Knicks

For years, the idea of the Nets moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn has been toyed with, but it wasn’t until 2009 when Mikhail Prokhorov bought the team and supplied the necessary funding to build the Barclays Center.

It will be a telling 2012-2013 season for the Nets and in order to be successful, they need a few things in order to get it done. Here are five of the most important factors that will determine the immediate future for the franchise.

Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov, thinks that his team can win a title within three years. A confident, motivated roster and an aggressive management group make this plan plausible.

Brooklyn spent nearly $330 million on roster upgrades, but critics claim the acquisition of Joe Johnson and extension of Brook Lopez were consolation prizes after failing to snag Dwight Howard

Regardless of whether or not Prokhorov was able to orchestrate a deal for the NBA’s best center, the expectations for his team going forward remain the same—they must be successful.

The Brooklyn Nets have been making noise this offseason, but have they been smart about it?

It has been two years since Mikhail Prokhorov purchased the team and the spending spree is finally underway. For a team that has not gotten much production from its draft picks, the Nets and their cash-flush owner were destined to rebuild through free agency.

With the pieces of a contender falling into place, the Nets have added some serious talent to their roster and some hefty contracts to their ledger.

When it comes to sports the first thing you need to realize is competitive balance is a fallacy, because you can’t balance competitive nature. Some are willing to do more to win, whether it means spending more money or playing for less.

Mikhail Prokhorov didn’t mind paying Joe Johnson’s exorbitant contract. Ray Allen was cool with half the annual salary in Miami that he could have made in Boston. Steve Nash turned down more money and his native country to join his divisional rival in L.

The old cliché in sports, “defense wins championships,” should be changed to “offseason acquisitions win championships” in the NBA.

Throughout the history of the league, owners and GMs’ shrewd summer moves have netted players that resulted in numerous championships for many franchises.

It seems that Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov and GM Billy King are subscribing to this school of thought and have major plans to upgrade their roster in anticipation of next season.

The organization has already inked Gerald Wallace to a new contract and traded for Joe Johnson, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

If the franchise can swing a deal for Dwight Howard and convince Deron Williams to re-sign, would it be considered one of the best offseasons of all time?

Let’s open the history books and take a look.
