You beat teams you’re supposed to beat. It’s one of the basic tenets of sports. And so far, it’s one the Knicks have followed to perfection.

New York took care of the Wizards and Suns this weekend at Madison Square Garden — two teams with a combined record of 8-24 — to improve to 12-4 on the season.

They are a 7-0 at home and 6-1 against teams that are under .500.

“You have to beat the teams you’re supposed to beat,” Tyson Chandler said after his 15-point, 13-rebound afternoon against Phoenix.

WHAT IT MEANS: Another game at Madison Square Garden, another win for the Knicks.

The Knicks topped the Suns on Sunday afternoon 106-99 and are 7-0 at home for the first time since 1992-93.

They have won all but one of their games at home by double figures and are 12-4, the second-best record in the Eastern Conference behind Miami (12-3).

MELO DRAMA: Stop me if you’ve heard this before: the Knicks’ offense was led by Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony had 34 points in 34 minutes.

Carmelo Anthony saw plenty of things he liked Sunday afternoon at the Garden.

His Knicks snapped a two-game losing streak with a 21-point win.

He had 29 points and didn’t have to labor much to get them.

And the Knicks bench poured in 57 points.

But there was one thing Anthony saw that stood out above all else.

“It was good to see the belt back out,” he said. “I’m glad to see it back.”

That’s right, Steve Novak’s “Discount Double-Check” celebration was back at Madison Square Garden.

Al Marchfeld headed to bed on the evening of Oct. 29 at his home in Oceanside, Long Island, not realizing how destructive Hurricane Sandy would be.
Then, early in the morning of Oct. 30, Marchfeld, who has been employed by the New York Knicks and Madison Square Garden for 63 straight years, woke up to his wife, Annette’s, shocking discovery.
“She said, ‘You’re not going to believe it. There’s three feet of water downstairs in the basement,’” Marchfeld, 79, told ESPNNewYork.

WHAT IT MEANS: There hasn’t been much to cheer about in New York over the past few days.

But for a few hours inside Madison Square Garden on Friday night, the Knicks gave a few thousand New Yorkers a reason to smile.

In the first major sporting event in New York City since Hurricane Sandy, the Knicks played near-flawless basketball in their win over the Miami Heat.

They shot 53 percent from beyond the arc and held the defending champs in check for long stretches in a 104-84 win.

The New York Knicks and Miami Heat are ready to renew their rivalry, Friday night at 8 p.m. (on ESPN).

The Heat already know what to expect at Madison Square Garden, especially considering it’s the Knicks’ season opener.

“We know how it is not only playing in the Garden, the Heat and the Knicks, but opening night Heat and the Knicks, that’s a whole different ballgame,” Miami’s Chris Bosh said at Friday’s morning shootaround. “But it will be a lot of fun.
