LAS VEGAS — You’re liable to see or hear anything during a weekend in Las Vegas. For example, the random guy in the taxi line who declared, “I smell like awesome.” Um, OK. The sights and sounds during the Clippers-Nuggets preseason game Saturday night — the first basketball game ever played at the Mandalay Bay Events Center — were far more standard. Here’s a few that stood out:
The Clippers leave for China on Sunday and Chris Paul said he hopes to begin full practices while they are there.

DALLAS — Tired?

Why would Kevin Durant be tired?

So what if he had to rush from the NBA Finals to Team USA training camp in Las Vegas less than two weeks later and then start promoting his new movie almost immediately after returning from a month in Europe that culminated with a gold-medal game even closer than the United States feared it would be?

“I’m 23,” Durant said Tuesday at a news conference in Dallas in advance of Friday’s regional release of “Thunderstruck.

NEW YORK, August 1, 2012 New York Knickerbockers Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations and General Manager Glen Grunwald announced today that the team has signed free agent guard Chris Smith to a contract.Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Smith, 6-2, 195 pounds, played two years at Louisville University to average 9.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists over 27.5 minutes in 40 games (38 starts), helping lead the Cardinals to reach the NCAA Final Four during his senior season in 2011-12. The Millstone, N.J native represented the Knicks entry at the 2012 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and is the younger brother of Knicks guard J.R. Smith.

Apparently this has caused a stir among Knicks fans and I’m not sure what the big deal is.  Smith was a good college player at Louisville and I’m sure they will invite other players to camp meaning the 15th spot is still wide open.

Chris Smith, the younger brother of guard J.R. Smith, will join the Knicks, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Terms of the contract have not been confirmed.

On Wednesday, J.R. tweeted a photo of Chris signing, but the deal won’t be official until the Knicks sign a contract and the NBA does its paperwork, typical for a new acquisition.

Chris Smith, a point guard from Louisville, played for the Knicks’ summer league team in Las Vegas.

If the old saying when constructing a monument goes “if you build it, they will come,” for athletes it should be “if you develop them, they will flourish.”

Thus could be the case of NBA power forward Malcolm Thomas.

We last saw Thomas wearing a Chicago Bulls summer league uniform as the leading rebounder in the Las Vegas basketball tournament. Hopefully, the next time we see Thomas, he will be with the Bulls as a regular contributor.

In the summer league, Thomas was very consistent as he averaged 11.4 points, 12.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in five games. Even more impressive were his robust offensive rebounding totals. His 23 offensive rebounds were worth 1/3 of the team’s totals.

Thomas’ rebounding was not the only thing on display in the summer league.

The way he ran the floor was inspiring. He showed poise on the court and proved to the many of us who watched that he can handle the ball.

Undrafted out of San Diego State, Thomas was not necessarily known for his offense. His 21 points in the loss to the Milwaukee Bucks‘ summer league team should dispel that belief. If there is any more evidence needed, one should look no further than his 53 percent shooting in Las Vegas.

That is not all.

His chemistry with both second-year swingman Jimmy Butler and rookie Marquis Teague spoke volumes.

They shared the ball well, communicated on defense and picked each other up when one of them made a bad play. It was that chemistry which should motivate the Bulls to not only get Thomas locked up with a two-year contract, but also give him a chance to be a mainstay on the Bulls’ revamped “Bench Mob.”

If Thomas can impress and stand out in the summer league (he was nominated for the 2012 NBA Summer League All-Star team), imagine him running the floor with the likes of Taj Gibson, the only other returning member of the “Bench Mob.” Thomas’ ball-handling should allow him to be able to spend some time at small forward, thus giving the Bulls an element that they have not had since Meta World Peace was known as Ron Artest.

Thomas could be a rugged defender on the wing and the weak side with his shot blocking.

This move for the Bulls could not make any more sense than it does now. They can also develop the rest of Thomas’ game with coach Tom Thibodeau’s help.

Thibodeau would have a pet project in Thomas whom he could groom into one of the better defensive players in the NBA. Thibodeau is widely considered to be one of the greatest defensive minds in basketball. He understands the ins and outs of defensive play. Keep in mind that he helped an abysmal defender in Kyle Korver become respectable on that end of the floor.

Thomas, with his defensive abilities, would benefit from Thibodeau’s teachings.

That said, the Bulls must sign Thomas now and develop him right away. They may have found that one athlete who can flourish.

Just days after the Golden State Warriors went an undefeated 5-0 at this year’s summer league, HoopsHype has reported that the team has signed their most impressive undrafted free agent on the squad in Kent Bazemore. A 6-foot-5, 195-pound swingman from Old Dominion, he saw action in four games at Las Vegas, averaging 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.8 blocks in 20.5 minutes a game.

The Boston Celtics made the decision to have their Summer League entrant participate in both the Orlando and Las Vegas leagues. This gave the movers and shakers an extended viewing window of their young prospects.

It is now time to see what they learned.

Boston’s team featured two 2011 draft picks as well as the three from last month. They were accompanied by a host of other castoffs looking for a shot at the big time. As it turned out, some of those secondary players proved their worth.

As we inch closer and closer to training camp, decisions will continue to be made as to who will get a shot at making the team this year and who has become expendable.

The New York Knicks were awful on the courts in Las Vegas for the 2012 NBA Summer League, but that is not going to matter for the 2012-13 NBA season.

With a team full of no-names who—for the most part—don’t stand a chance of making New York’s roster, expectations were low entering the summer league. That makes a winless campaign during which the Knicks averaged 78 points per game easier to stomach.

Over the short summer season we learned a few things, most importantly that New York’s summer league was bad…

…But the regular season doesn’t have to be.
