Alert: Video contains one TV-14 word.
In a way, the life of the working NBA player is probably pretty boring. There’s a lot of time to spend on airplanes and hotel rooms, where the only readily available activities are watching movies, playing video games, and reading books. After time, though, even the most committed players would get tired of that life. They’d need something else to keep them entertained.
So, if Dwight Howard got on the team plane’s intercom to make jokes about Thanksgiving, they might laugh even if his jokes weren’t really jokes or anything beyond a silly voice. It would be a reprieve from watching the same episode of “Boardwalk Empire” five times, and that might be enough.
Given the references to Turkey Day, Kurt Helin of ProBasketballTalk hypothesized that this video was taken on the flight either before or after the Lakers’ very disappointing 113-97 loss to the Sacramento Kings last Wednesday. In that contest, Howard finished with only seven points on four field-goal attempts and struggled mightily to defend the paint. Yet, as Patch Adams once taught us all, you cannot determine the value of the power of laughter.
It’ll never end, you know, the chatter about Phil Jackson and the Los Angeles Lakers. Why should they? Especially when Phil probably had a mind to consider coaching the team before Mike D’Antoni took over as Lakers coach, and the Lakers certainly entertained the idea before giving in to Jim Buss’ whims and settling on D’Antoni. The speculation is over, D’Antoni is here to stay and Jackson probably won’t ever see a Laker sideline again, but on the heels of his first actual interview following the Lakers’ decision, Phil seems as bemused and at ease as ever.
And, because it’s 2012, the first interview didn’t go to Sam Smith or Roland Lazenby or one of the writers for the Los Angeles Times. Instead, some TMZ freelancer with a camera caught up to Phil in California on Monday, and TMZ has the quotes (if, not the shared video).
Phil Jackson says he’s NOT bitter at the Lakers for passing him over for the head coaching job earlier this month … claiming Lakers brass decided to go with Mike D’Antoni in a “midnight coup.”
The Zen Master was out in Santa Barbara this weekend … when he was asked if he felt the Lakers treated him unfairly during the negotiations. Jackson explained, “We never discussed any terms … so there was never anything unfair about it.”
Phil — now 67-years-old — also made it clear … the chances of him ever coaching in the NBA again are “slim and none.”
COMMENTARY | With two minutes left in the third quarter of Monday’s Bulls-Bucks NBA game, I left the upstairs press box at the United Center to make my way down to the press room in order to write my post-game report. The Bulls were winning by 27 points at the time.
OKLAHOMA CITY — Before the Charlotte Bobcats took the floor Monday, coach Mike Dunlap told his players to not listen to the outside noise. Even though the team had already matched its season win total from the season before, he didn’t want the Bobcats to start believing the hype about how good they were.
Around sports, there’s a trend of athletes wearing special bracelets and necklaces that purport to unlock previously locked energy potential via holograms, ions, and other cool-sounding methods. Unfortunately, the science behind these products is quite dubious, if not absent altogether. One of the biggest energy bracelets, Power Balance, even paid a $57 million out-of-court class-action settlement after consumers alleged rampant false advertising regarding the bracelets’ capabilities. That payment forced them into bankruptcy, but they’re still making products . Reach for those profits in any way you can, guys!
Despite these issues, the NBA has gladly taken on Power Balance as a business partner. Although the company no longer lends its name to the home arena of the Sacramento Kings, it does make versions of its bracelets emblazoned with the logos of all 30 NBA teams. Naturally, that means the league also wants players to wear the bracelets as a form of advertisement.
Outspoken Dallas Mavericks owner isn’t having it. In a video posted to his YouTube account (via PBT ), Cuban spoke out about the junk science behind the bracelets, threw them into the trash, and asked the NBA what it could possibly have been thinking. Tim McMahon of ESPNDallas.com has more :
